I am not in Seattle. They're going to have to run the Blerch without me. Losing a month of training to a broken toe was just too much. I feel like a failure, but I know there'll be other marathons. I still have the half marathon at the end of October...

6 September 2015 - ~8 mi

Bandy Creek Campground - Tonight I ran the John Litton Farm Loop. It was a good run, but I got lost in the Scott Forest toward the end so I ended up going about 8 miles. It also rained.

1 September 2015 - 1 mi

Short, 1 mile run today.

31 August 2015 - 6 mi

Went for a six mile run this AM; to Apsen Grove Park + back. Felt great! Don't think I'm up for a marathon in 2 weeks, but I can surely run the half-marathon I signed up for at the end of October. Barring future injury that is. No doubt my knee and toes will be complaining later. Now I just feel endorphins!

13 August 2015 - 1ish mi

Short Run this AM. Toes hurt a little on the uphill. I wish I could do more, but I want them to heal.

8 August 2015 - 3.1 mi

26:01 in the Tomato 5K this AM. Not bad for 2 broken toes! I do wonder about my two best times being on the same course though. Maybe it is the course and not me!

Today was just a short run. We're driving to Texas tonight & my knee was kinda sore after my long run Wednesday.

15 July 2015 - 10 mi, 206.6 lbs

I have not run in about a week. At least my on week / off week schedule puts me at an on week for the marathon. I felt like I could run forever this morning. Unfortunately I had to take Zara to horse camp so I could only run for a couple hours. There are so many places to run in Cool Springs. And we are only 69 miles from Alabama. That's how good I felt this morning - I considered running to Alabama. I'm sure it didn't hurt that the thunderstorms yesterday really cooled things down. It is also really convenient to run where there are so many sprinklers available. It's like having a water fountain whenever I need one. I don't think any of the buildings around here are ecofriendly enough to use grey water for irrigation...

8 July 2015 - 6.5 mi, 212.6 lbs

This morning Cara & I started out together, but split up as we left the neighborhood. She did our usual 3+ mile out and back while I did my new 6.5 mile loop. It was a good cool morning for a run. I felt like I could have done more! Traffic, however, on this new route of mine is rather more dangerous during the 7 o'clock hour than during the 5 o'clock hour when I first ran it. I will have to take that into consideration and be more studious about getting up earlier.

6 July 2015 - 213.4 lbs, 3+ mi

Run with Cara this AM was a good one. We ran our usual loop and she was flying and confident. It helps that it was a nice cool morning. This summer has been very mild except, of course, that one week the air conditioner was broken.

5 July 2015 - 214.2 lbs, 6 mi

24 miles this week after my run this afternoon. It seems like an accomplishment untli I remembered I'll be running more than that in a single day in a little over two months. My weight has really plateaued, but I'm trying to add more salad and fresh food to my diet. Getting under 180 isn't really doable by race day anymore, but I think I may still be able to get under 200.

30 June 2015 - 211.6 lbs, 6.5 mi

Ten miles so far this week, although I have no idea how on Earth I'm going to get to 24! Last week was another off week. I didn't get a good start and then I ended up spending all Saturday cleaning out the garage which yielded me a sore back. Good thing there's yoga! Now that I have found this 6.5 mile route with a convenient bathroom stop at Aspen Grove Park I think I will be able to get in longer average runs though it's hard to get in really long runs because weekend activities seem to get in the way.

This week the Huse's will be back in town from Norway and the four of us are all running a race on the 4th: the Firecracker 5K/10K. I'm running the 10K while the others are running the 5K along with Kirsten from Cara's lab. I'm hoping I'm in good enough shape to challenge my 9 year old PR of 59:19, but it will likely depend on the weather and my Friday night...

20 June 2015 - 10 mi

Today was my second time entering in a 10 mile race, the same one at the RC Cola & Moon Pie Festival that I did last year. I am happy to say that my time improved by several minutes. This is good, hard data that my marathon training is paying off. Afterward we went to the festival, but I was pretty tired because I stayed up partying the night before. We had a bunch of people over from my work and Cara's work which was a lot of fun. I also got a little sunburnt.

17 miles so far this week! No where near the 30+ I was running last spring after my half marathon, but getting there. My weight will also probably show a bump up tomorrow from the aforementioned partying. Not that that schedule was really realistic to begin with.

17 June 2015 - 3+ mi

This morning was a run with Cara. The last few have been with Zinners instead.

12 June 2015 - 209.2 lbs, 3+ mi

3rd run of the week was this AM. It was the first full run with Cara since she's been back. My shoes are not as comfortable when I run with her because I have to slow my pace too much I think. We tried to run on Wednesday, but she had a bit of a breakdown and turned back before we left the neighborhood. So much of running is mental. I had an awful week with a single run that also didn't make it out of the neighborhood last week. C'est la vive. Missed runs and bad runs can be hard to bounce back from, but Cara was in great form this AM. She ran better even than Zinners, who I decided to let come with us. Our dog Zinny is now the same age as when our first dog, Molly, died. Molly had a giant tumor in her abdomen though. Still, seven is getting on in years for a dog. This comic from The Oatmeal probably says it best.

Anyway, by the time we'd gone about three miles Zinny was pretty spent - you know, tongue lolling in her saliva beard. To her credit she had not tried to sit down and stop yet. I guess that usually that happens around mile 4 or 5 though. By then we were back in the neighborhood, so I took her down to the little creek by the road and let her walk along through it, lapping up the water as she went. This she enjoyed greatly, although Cara was a little confused as to why I had veered off the road suddenly.

9 June 2015 - 210.0 lbs, 3+ mi

How is it the ninth of June already? Felt strong for my run this morning. It was solo, so I didn't feel like I was leaving Cara behind. Less than two weeks until my 10 miler in Bell Buckle. It's hard to get the miles in. I sure didn't last week. This, though, is a new week.

30 May 2015 - 215.2 lbs, 3.1 mi

This morngin was the Gauntlet 5K obstacle course. Cara did walk quite a bit, but it was a very hilly trail run and we still beat Conlan and Jandra. Super fun!

28 May 2015 - 214.6 lbs, 3 mi

Nine miles so far this week. Six to go. Missed the run I'd planned yesterday on account of staying up too late reading and rain. Cara and I had an okay run this morning. The thick humidity of the air really wore her down. This was the last training run before our big team race Saturday. I'm hoping she'll still keep running with me after that, but next week she'll be in California and then driving across the country with Jaime.

22 May 2015 - 214.8 lbs, 3 mi

Today was another run in my New Shoes, this time without my Cara. It was mentally challenging - I'm not sure why I'm having difficulty with this lately - but it was a solid run completed in under a half an hour.

I accidentally left my running shoes at home on my trip to Staunton this past weekend so I failed to get in all of the running I intended last week. I had a good run with Cara this morning, although my right foot started hurting on the last mile so when she started walking I upped my speed to a more normal pace. I am not sure why running faster hurts less. Perhaps it is a more natural gait. I actually need to buy new running shoes because the ones I have are falling apart - the soles are becoming detached from the rest of the shoe.

13 May 2015 - 217.2 lbs, 3 mi

This morning's run with Cara was even better. She's enjoying that quick growth that comes at the beginning of a training regime.

11 May 2015 - 217.2 lbs, 3 mi

217.2 lbs after running with Cara this AM. She did surprisingly well - we only walked a little bit! We are training for a team obstacle course race (The Gauntlet) at the end of the month. Conlan & Jandra are also doing it, so there is extra impetus to try hard.

9 May 2015 - 221.4 lbs, 3.1 mi

I've been training a few weeks already but today I decided to put my training notes online rather than just keep them in a paper journal. I like the feel of paper, but it's not particularly good for sharing in a 21st century way. Today was the third time our family has run the Strawberry Stride. I ran 5 miles on Wednesday rather than splitting it up between Wednesday and Thursday so I'd have 2 days to recover before the race. I knew I was going to lose to Maxwell, but I didn't want it to be too bad. The race course was familiar running it for the 3rd time. My ankles hurt pretty badly during the second mile, leading me to slow down - 8:04 for the first mile, 18:20 after two miles. I feel like a little more success on the weight site would alleviate issues like this. I know the goal I've set of losing 2 lbs a week is wildly unrealistic, but it would get me to 180 (a healthy weight for someone my size) by raceday.
