I spent the morning prepping for our trip this weekend to
Telemark (reserving the car, the hotel in Vrådel) and next
week to Deutschland (just reserving the car for 3 days). But who
wants to spend all day in front of a computer!
Hopptårn
Hopped on the train in Mortensrud and headed downtown. It's
already 11AM, which is suboptimal. Plan for
the day is to get off at Frognersetteren high above Oslo and
hike down to the Sognsvann. "Vann" is the Norsk for water and in
this case it connotates a lake. I brought my suit along to swim
in the lake, although all the pics online are of people in wetsuits.
Kanutte says getting off at
Holmenkollen to see the ski jump is a must, so this was the first
stop after I switched to 1 line downtown. The Frognersetteren
line goes up and up! The houses up here have beautiful views
down to the sea. The sign at Holmenkollen says it's 278 moh.
Kanutte was right. Hopptårnet is the sort of insane thing
that makes the rest of human endeavor seem dominated by fear. On
this thing you can have none. Apparently Tor-Helge climbed it 24
times in row during the summer. It was a competition. I took the
easy way and paid $15 for an elevator ride to the top. The views
at the top were incredible. Definitely look at the pictures in
the link at the top of the page. I was able to transcend fear
into exhilaration. After the ride back down I enjoyed a Lakse
sandwich at the café and a Huse apple. The fancy makes
eating more than just a delay on my journey.
Back on the train to Frognersettern there were a lot more people
on the train. I wondered if it was kids out of school, but it
was only 2 o'clock. Up, up, up we went. Getting off at
Frognersetteren I discovered it must be a biking field trip of
some sort.
