Savannah to Detroit

Currently I'm flying over the US on my way from Savannah to Detroit. It's been a whirlwind few days since arriving back on this side of the pond. I went out in downtown Atlanta Wednesday night with Brittan. She took me to the good old Taco Mac, where in an ironic twist of fate she now works. Then Thursday saw me driving down to Hilton Head where I met Bethany and Nate at my parents' house. Unfortunately the parental units are away at a conference in Phoenix, so we had the house to ourselves. Jaime and Lexi have moved into their own place now that Jaime's a college grad and has a fancy accounting job. Zinny was there waiting for me though, and oh so happy to see me! I've missed my doglove, too.

Friday saw us head over to Savannah to pick up our race bibs for Saturday's marathon. Indeed, that's what brought us both here to test if our year of training was enough. Oh, and did I mention that I had to fit in 8 hours of work and meetings a day around all this? Phew!

Saturday saw Bethany and I on a hotter than expected course achieving our goals. Hers was to finish her first marathon, and mine was to finish in under 5 hours. All that training in the mountains of Norway paid off, as I found myself making in through all 26.2 miles without my legs cramping up like they have in a 3 of my prior marathons. I beat my goal by almost 13 minutes and crossed the finish line with beer in hand feeling like a million bucks. Afterward Bethany and I took our smelly selves down to River Street for some food and well deserved beers before taking the ferry back across the Savannah River to the parking area. This is the 4th city this year I've unexpectedly found myself taking a ferry in this year. First in Boston on our unexpected daylong layover there. Then in Stavanger because to get to the mountians to hike I discovered I had to. Then on our planned daylong layover in Stockholm we took one just for the heck of it because Cara wanted to. And then Saturday back and forth across the river in Savannah.

Sunday was a pretty lazy day. I had to do a bugfix for work. Bethany and Nate headed back to Nashville. Lexi kept me company though. And then the two of us went to the beach. Sea Pines Beach Club was closed while they added sand with bulldozers, so we had to sneak past the security guard to get on to Tower Beach (my car doesn't have an owner decal). She is a delight to talk to - curious about everything! She thought I was a little nuts to get in the water, but she joined me all the same. It's a lot warmer than the North Sea I can tell you that! Then we went back to Jaime's for dinner and to watch "The Force Awakens", which Lexi had not yet seen. It was fun to see Jaime unnecessarily dramatically read the opening scrawl to her daughter just like I do with my kids. Apparently we both picked up that habit from our dad!

This week I'm in Ohio onboarding a new team member, which is always fun. Although the flight was delayed so unfotunately I'm not arriving until the afternoon. Hopefully we've got enough set up for him to do until then. I also realize that although I've kept up with writing my blog, I haven't posted them since September. The nomad life wears on ya...
