It's Memorial Day in the United States, but here in Norway I spent the morning finishing reading George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia. Admittedly my knowledge of the Spanish Civil War is lacking, but Orwell's first hand account really shows what a mess it was. He went to help in the fight against Fascism and came away with and understanding of just how cruel and dishonest Communism is as well. It is not surprising that the experiences he had in those few months he was there shaped a worldview that created classics like 1984 and Animal Farm. Although I've yet to read the latter. And rather disturbingly the former is omitted from my list of books I've read, but it's not the first book I've realized I've forgotten to add there. I know I read it before Amazon deleted it from everyone's Kindle...
