Books the educated man should read

An extremely incomplete but evolving list

  • Aristotle Politics
  • Churchill, Winston The history of English-Speaking Peoples
  • Clarke, Arthur C. - basically everything he wrote
  • Dawkins, Richard The God Delusion
  • Feynman, Richard P. Lectures on Physics
  • Gibbon, Edward The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
  • Livy (Titus Livius) The History of Rome from its Foundation
  • Mehra, Jagdesh The Beat of a Different Drummer - the authoritative biography of Richard P. Feynman including all the physics.
  • Rand, Ayn Atlas Shrugged - warning, this book may change the way you look at the world
  • Tolkien, J. R. R. The Lord of the Rings

  • Bhagavad Gita - a part of the longer Mahabharata which many Hindus consider to contain the main points of their philosophy. Warning: still used as a religious text.
  • Bible - Perhaps the widest read work of historical fiction and it contains the stored wisdom of a culture. Warning: still used as a religious text.
  • The Book of Morman - I think Joseph Smith was genuinely insane rather than a charlatan, but his work forshadows later individuals like J.R.R. Tolkien who created their own religions.
  • Qu'ran - The ramblings of a meglomaniacal conquerer that hone the semetic monotheism which was earlier expressed by Arrius, but suppressed by the Christian church in intervening years. cf. The Book of Morman Warning: still used as a religious text.
  • Ramayana - Indian equivalent of the Greek Odyssey. Warning: still used as a religious text.

Why read fiction when reality is so much more interesting?
