Redwood Camping | Monterey | Fremont Peak

After breaking camp this morning we drove out to Route 1 and then on down to Monterey. We stopped for Slurpees on the way. It's a beautiful drive down Route 1, and I remembered my dad's white knuckles as a kid. We got to Monterey just in time for the start of the Deutschland - Sverige World Cup match. We ate and watched it at a sports bar. Maxwell and Zara bet on the game, and Maxwell was hella nervous after Sverige took the lead to start off with. 2-1 Deutschland was the final in extra minutes.

We came to Monterey to see the aquarium, and see it we did! Star Trek IV all over again, but this time we saw tons of humpback whales out in Monterey Bay. Lunch was too expensive. Dinner was too expensive. But we made up for it in time spent learning about the marine biology of this beautiful coast.

Leaving Monterey we headed up to Fremont Peak to camp and hopefully experience the observatory. We were not disappointed on either count. Cara was a little negative about finding a campsite and the walk through the dark to the observatory, but she got excited after the first look through a telescope. We saw the Galilean moons of Jupiter, Saturn's rings, the craters of the moon, and M57. The latter we came back to because they had to move the big telescope, but Maxwell was super excited to get back up there even though it was almost midnight by then.
