Tonight Maxwell an I went to the Google Developers Meetup here
in Bergen for an introduction to the Go programming language.
Although Maxwell described it afterward as an introduction to
the Go programming language if you already know all the other
languages, I think he got a lot out of it. During the workshop
period rather than follow the excercises he wanted to build an
accounting system that you could interact with on the command
line. Since we only had an hour I helped him scale that back
to an MVP - a program that would ask for a balance, then a
withdrawal amount, and then calculate and report the new
balance. Damn if we didn't get tripped up learning Go's IO
libraries! He came away with an understanding of how that
problem could be more difficult than expected, and we had a
lot of fun.
We started doing silly accents at the bus stop on the way
home and then things just got really silly. I think the two of
us have finally ferretted out the difference between Australia
and New Zealand accents though: it's in the lip position. The
Australian accent has a wide smile while the New Zealander
speaks with tighter, rounded lips. At home he and Zara sat on
my bed while I packed for Lisbon, and then we all snuggled
together for the next chapter of White Fang. I couldn't resist
reading it in accents and translating it on the spot into
French, Norwegian, etc. I think I read the first paragraph 20
times with Maxwell rolling on the bed laughing while Zara
annoyedly demanded I stop.
These are the sorts of evenings that really make life fabulous!
