So I finally finished reading John Derbyshire's Prime Obsession
which started off quite inspiringly but finished in a
quagmire of handwaving about complicated mathematics that just
leaves the reader diappointed. I supposed the book's goal of
presenting the Riemann Hypothesis to the general reader was
bound to end this way, but the first half of the book or so
did a great job of interweaving a strong historical narrative
with some well explained mathematics. Things really went off
the rails when Derbyshire abandoned historical progressive to
explore the various paths attempts at proving the Hypothesis
have taken mathematicians. After such a good start it was sad
to see it end this way, but it seems that some authors just
don't have the stamina to complete what they set out to do and
yet are unwilling to abandon that scope for a more restricted
one.
