I'm back in Deutschland again. Es ist vielleicht Heimat für
mich. If anywhere is these days. I'm currently writing from a
little wooden hut Erdinger's set up at the Tempelhof Flughafen
which is apparently no langer used as a Flughafen. Last week
Maxwell wanted to watch Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
which is a good father/son flick where they go to Berlin at
the height of the Third Reich. Berlin now is more like the
it was in the 1920's - an expressive cosmopolitan city. Brittan
brought me back a piece of die Mauer when she came here a few
years back. I still have it in a box in Tennessee. Seems like
the sort of thing Maxwell might appreciate as well given his
interest in politics and history. Tomorrow I am running in the
Berlin Halbmarathon which is why I'm at Tempelhof today thanks
to Axel who convinced me to join him here. He drove up with
Susan and the kids and they're meeting me for dinner after a
day at Legoland. I still don't have a phone or any credit
cards, so it's like the 70's except there is no East and West
and Iron Curtain anymore. Funny Churchill gave that speech in
Missouri, because I used to see Missouri all the time and now
it seems I am seeing Deutschland all the time. A week ago it
was Vienna on the way to and from Mallorca, which seems like
a part of Deutschland itself and then two weeks before that it
was Frankfurt on the way to and from San Francisco.
I just saw somebody order 3 beers using the thumb and two
fingers and it made me way too happy. Quentin Tarantino is of
course a genius and Michael Fassbender really should have
gotten an Oscar for his portrayal of Magneto. It is a bit
weird to be unable to share any of this with the outside world
but it has been fabulous being without my phone for a week. I
am happy that Rammstein wrote a song to commemorate my trip
here though.
