So this morning Zara came down and asked me to brush her hair
and I love her so I did. I was as gentle as I could be. And
the snarls I dealt with as simply as I could. Hair brushing is
an emotional thing in our family. Cara has always said her
best memories of her father before he died are how he brushed
her hair. And when Cara hated young Zara and this feeling was
reciprocated I broke the cycle by suggesting Cara let Zara
brush her hair. It was, perhaps, a simple thing, but the path
that let daughter have enough power over mother to feel
confident and mother learn to trust her offspring. Zara almost
never asks me to brush her hair, so I was floored this morning
when she did.
