Arkady Martine's first novel is a space opera which draws in the reader from the outset and has enough tidbits about the wider world to really believe it is a well-developed one. This is not surprising, given that she took her PhD in Byzantine History, although the Teixcalaan culture she creates felt more Aztec. The main character Mahit is quickly thrown into a Heinleinesque whodunnit, where we learn things as she does. This gives the book a fairly fast pace that is difficult to put down.
My only complaint is that I have to wait until 2021 to read the sequel!
