Meatless March

It went downhill pretty fast after that. This project was not completed, but I did learn some delicious new recipes!

Screwed up while hiking and ate fish soup. The board said gulrotsuppe, but it definitely tasted like fish. Delicious, and there were no real pieces of fish. I didn't realize my mistake until afterward. Should I throw out the month? No. The project continues.

I am not sure that I'm going to succeed at this experiment. Living alone I'm already depressingly bad at feeding myself, and now a lot of my go-to meals are just off the table. It doesn't help that this is the hard part of life, both financially and emotionally. The quickest pick me up I know of in the darkest hours has always been a cheeseburger, and this month I'm denying myself that singular joy. It is likely unfair to blame the meatlessness for my current depressed mental state, but it certainly isn't helping.

Tonight's vegan sushi night! Now there's a couple words I never thought I'd use for food I was eating, much less in succession. I have Maxwell to blame for getting me into sushi. We had a tradition of going to a Japanese steakhouse to treat Alora and Brittan on beach vacations, but when milk allergic Maxwell came along he couldn't eat off of the buttered grill so we let him experiment with ordering other things. After a few iterations he settled on tuna sushi, which remains a favorite of his to this day. The vegan part is, I guess, explained by the current dietary experiment. An experiment which surprisingly hasn't made me homicidally hungry yet. I actually feel great, but it could also be the increasing sunshine as we approach the equinox. Not coming home in the dark is a not surprising pick-me-up. The name of the sushi place I frequent here in Bergen, Sabrura, has several locations and is a Norwegian joke that happens to look and sound like a Japanese word. "Sa brura" literally means "said the bride", which is the Norwegian equivalent of "that's what she said".

It wasn't really fair to start this experiment after a stomach bug last weekend. I know I had less energy in the early part of the week because of that. So far I think I'm consuming more calories than I otherwise would, but again I think that might be recovery from last weekend. I've also realized that I'm using the Hindu rather than the Catholic definition of "meat". Here because of that heritage they don't think fish as meat, despite agreeing that they belong in the animal kingdom. It's been a few centuries since Norway was Catholic, but they still have a state church and they still celebrate Lent or fastetiden as it's called here. I'm also now realizing that my Meatless March is inside of this period. Whoops! C'est la vive.

Why Can't My Cat Be Vegan?

1 March 2021

Here are the rules of the game: No meat for the month. The idea is for health benefits, so that means farm animals, fish, eggs, etc. It doesn't mean milk products, which I guess is still animal proteins. And actually I'm realizing now that it doesn't include the fish oil vitamins I take daily. I think similarly I'm not going to worry excessively about things like what my french fries are fried in. My theory is that this project will make me insane with meat hunger and overtired. I plan to continue my regular training regime and baseball practice is starting back up this week.
