13 May 2021 - Askøy

Today I finally took it upon myself to harvest some of an abundant food resource nearby in the fjord: seaweed. For many cultures living on rocky coasts it's an important dietary staple. The type I harvested is I think called bladderwrack or blæretang locally. It's a brown, edible algae and my plan is to dry it out before consumption.


14 May 2021 - Askøy

I brought the seaweed inside when it got dark last night and today it is drizzly and cloudy so I'm continuing to dry it on the table instead.


19 May 2021 - Askøy

The seaweed isn't looking much changed in the drying process. I tried some this morning and after the initial saltiness it was just really chewy. I'm thinking that the best thing to with it is to break it into little pieces to sprinkle on food, but I'm not sure the best way to go about that. I don't think crushing will work, so I may have to cut it.


25 May 2021 - Askøy

A recent article from the Havforskningsinstituttet which Ane pointed out to me warns of too much iodine in most seaweed, so perhaps I must moderate my intake once it's dry enough to pulverize. All drains lead to the ocean I guess....

30 May 2021 - Askøy

Ane tried some of the seaweed yesterday and had to spit it out. It is crisp from drying but still maleable enough not to snap much of the time. Drying continues.

14 June 2021 - Askøy

This experiment, sadly, I must chalk up as a failure as the seaweed is still too rubbery to crush, but has started growing fungus. Ergo I do not believe it is safe to eat.
