First Person Singular

Haruki Murakami I discovered by reading his running book some years back. And this month I read his new collection of short stories entitled First Person Singular. I enjoy reading Murakami because he writes in what I'd call a regular guy style. One of the stories is about writing poems to his favorite baseball team. Another is about meeting a talking monkey at a hotel and enjoying a few beers. The stories also take on a koan like quality in that questions raised in the tales sometimes remain unanswered. I wouldn't call it great literature, but I again came away feeling Murakami was a kindred spirit, a fellow traveler through life. If anything I felt inspired to write again myself. ![]() |
