20 September 2023 - Adetswil Helen Czerski, author of Blue Machine, is a television presenter for the BBC and writes in the conversational style of reportage. This leads to some interesting British vernacular sneaking in, like "snaffle" and "hoover". She is also a scientist and the book is filled with interesting vignettes of physics, chemistry and biology. She is equally at home discussing Fritz Haber's attempts to extract gold from the ocean to pay off Germany's post-WWI war debt and the worm Ramisyllis multicaudata which implants iteslf inside a sponge, grows multiple anuses with gonads and eyes, and then releases these anuses off to mate. Overall it's an excellent, wholistic picture of the Earth's oceans. ![]() |
