23 November 2023 - Schweiz ![]() This year I have a lot to be thankful for. It's been something of a depressing time with no work to do and hearing from my kids that they don't want to see me for the holidays. Last night in the bath I had an epiphany though: I am already dead and Switzerland is heaven. My aunt Dell says that it's a choice what we decide to focus on and I choose to focus on that. Every morning when I walk the dogs I get to gaze on the Alps just 50 kilometers away. An hour on the bus and train and I can hike where others come for vacation. I have a pub with just around the corner that sometimes has live music. There's another at the top of the hill above town. At home there's a woman who loves me and loves to cook for me. And there's the two dogs who are my daily forest companions. We we run it's their favorite thing and thankfully my legs can still carry me for half a marathon or more. The Zürich airport is not far either, and being in the middle of Europe means I'm a short flight away from anywhere on the continent. As the graph shows, the past two years have seen me travel internationally more than most. I've been able to walk across Spain, work on an archeological dig in Ireland, run up Mount Vesuvius, visit an active volcano in Hawaii, and spelunk in caves of the Balkan Karst region that coined the term. Iwona, you really brought me heaven! |
