21 December 2023 - Schweiz

Schwytzerdütsch isn't Hochdeutsch. I'm reminded of this fact every day I venture out of my house and talk to people. The languages are similar and have a common origin, but they're not the same. Last night I went out to a film where the Schwytzerdütsch were instead forced to speak a foreign tongue, Bon Schuur Ticino. The premise of the film, set in Switzerland, is that the country votes to start using a single language. In a country with direct democracy the people really could do this. The humor comes in when the chosen language is French, and the plot follows a Swiss German cop who bungles his way into the Italian resistance in the Swiss Canton of Ticino (the only one where they speak Italian). Shot on locations I recognize from my travels around the country, it's a visual pleasure of a movie. And watching the Schwytzerdütsch struggle with another language is deliciously pure schadenfreude.
