26 December 2023 Just outside the Schengen zone terminal at Zürich airport is a bookshop with a good selection of recent books published in English. Maybe because I've always been a bit of a romantic in the literary sense Andrea Wulf's Magnificent Rebels caught my eye on the way to Spain a few months back. I was immediately drawn into the 1790's in Jena. Goethe, Schiller, Humbolt and others enjoyed one of those rare moments in history when great minds are together and elevate eachother. Wulf's exhaustively researched narrative lets the reader be a fly on the wall to this explosion of creation. Knowing it was something special I savored reading it and drew it, but, just like the Jena set split up and their collaboration came to an end, so too I finished the book this morning. ![]() |
