12 January 2024 - Kempten In a fog you can't really see what's ahead. It's also the word for how your brain feels on shingles. But maybe it's a fitting metaphor for this Winter as well. I think I know which direction I'm going and then everything becomes unclear again. I've been watching Hayao Miyazaki movies this week as well, which definitely doesn't ground one. I introduced Iwona to Howl's Moving Castle. Then I watched The Wind Rises for the first time and last night I went out to the theater to see The Boy and the Heron. In the last film the pain in the right side of the boy's head mirrored my own, which primed me to look for more meaning than was perhaps there. Studying Japanese has, however, been one of the few constants these past few months. On Monday we're flying to Bergen, but Cara has convinced Maxwell to ostracize me again. And she's got Zara firmly in shell. The impotence of fatherhood in the 21st century is really a travesty, but not one I know how to fix. They live with her and spout the poison they're fed at me via WhatsApp. Alora is firmly in the grasp of the cult of transgenderism and Brittan is just silent. An important part of any cult is to cut out contact with anyone who questions the cult, and this one is no different. It doesn't help that society seems to believe imperfect fathers deserve punishment whereas imperfect mothers deserve pity and even help. Patriarchy my ass. The snow this time of year turns Switzerland into a beautiful sculpture and I draw solace from time spent in Nature. The icicles around the waterfall near our home form a giant chandelier. The snow-weighted branches of conifers are like a sugar-coated fairy tale. The snow reflects the light and cuts through the darkness of the short days. And with Spring no doubt the fog will burn off and I'll see my path clearly ahead. I wrote the above in the morning. In the afternoon Anita invited me on a hike up Hörnli, where we literally got above the fog. Which just goes to show, that sometimes when you're in a fog you need a friend to get you out of it. ![]() Paula & Eddie enjoyed the romp thoroughly |
