27 January 2024 - Welschenrohr Under the Swiss racing convention I'm now 45 since my birth year was 1979. I suppose that makes the math easier. So M45 instead of M40 as they usually break things down into 5 year brackets. But today's race in Solothurn is a small one, so I get to feel younger running M35! The other categories are M20 and M50. Even with a 15 year spread there are still only 4 other competitors in my bracket, all younger: kids of the 80's. RFID anklets were the order of the day for our 8 rounds of 880m each through the muddy field behind the school on this sunny afternoon. Advertised as an 8K, this Langcross was more like 7. Maybe it's the Celtic influence here in Welschenrohr, although they do speak French just over on the other side of the mountain. I managed a respectable 6 min/km pace as expected, but still managed to get lapped at least once by every single one if the 15 other runners. Although I'm pretty sure the 98 kg I weighed in at this morning exceeded the mass of the entire female contingent. Both of them were tiny! Still, it was a fun race and most of the spectators learned my name by the end despite it not even being on my bib. I'm just glad I was able to count laps correctly today unlike the debacle last month in Sion. |
