11 April 2025 When in Bratislava castle earlier this week I naturally perused the books they had in their gift shops. Sadly, nearly all appeared to be in Slovak. But, when I saw Pavel Scheufler's Pivo, I decided to pick it up and give it a try. Pivo is, of course, the Slavic word for beer which is conserved across all the languages I've encountered so far. It's an important word! Scheufler is a photographer who also writes about photography and this book is a collection of photos from antebellum Bohemia showcasing beer culture there. Ergo the book is in Czech, not Slovak, although reading it through Google Translate Slovak seemed to work just fine. It was quite interesting to see how little has changed in the past century. This was also the first book I've read entirely through Google Translate, and I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. ![]() |
