29 May 2025 - Bologna Today we are spending all day on the train - 11 hours or so from Zürich to Assisi. The first leg, to Milan, was on an SBB train. Now we on one of TrenItalia's. The AC stopped working for a while and it became oppresively hot. The dogs are definitely ready to get out, but we have nearly 4 hours to go. I finished reading the week's Economist and I am on to typing this blog. I ran this morning, so I will probably fall asleep at some point. Outside the window pass flat, seemingly endless fields. Crossing the Po river I find myself in Emilia-Romagna for the first time. Later after passing through Tuscany again we'll end up in Umbria, which will also be a first for me. On the train we struck up a conversation with a young Moldovan couple and discussed our lives and cultural differences. The young man will be working a summer job in Wisconsin to practice his English. The young lady loved math. They both speak Romanian and Russian as they learn it in school from a young age, their country having once been a part of Romania and once a part of the Soviet Union. |
