Joseph Heller's Catch-22 is considered a classic and the title exists now in American English to refer to a rule (often bureaucratic) that prevents so legitimate aim from being achieved. The book, however, is pure prolix nonsense. I feel dumber for having read it. I left the book in a bar in Le Pin for it's next victim.
