Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage is a novel over a century old. It's a coming of age story of a "youth" who enlists in the union army and goes off to fight in the America Civil War. It's a solid coming of age story that also shows the gory side of war. Crane also sets the dialog in American 19th century vernacular, which was pleasant to read for someone so long in Europe like myself. I left it at the Lesebank in the Küsnacht forest during my run yesterday for the next reader to discover.
