Michael Axworthy's History of Iran is also titled Empire of the Mind as he takes for a unifying principle the idea of Iran. While he does hit the important highlights of political events, Axworthy's focus is on religion, language, poetry, art, and the other things that make a culture a culture. A thread flowing throughout is that while Iran is repeated conquered military throughout history, those conquerors adopt Iranian customs and language after a generation or two. It is an interesting, high level way to introduce Iranian history.
