I picked up Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle in Noréaz, Switzerland on another hike earlier this year. It's previous owner was a French-speaking girl who highlighted some sentences and wrote French translations of some words in the margins. The book was creepy as expected and told in first person by the murderer, who happens to also be a young girl. I can't really recommend it though, as that sort of first person crazy talk can get into one's head.
