Working the swing shift this past week I have missed my Sweebus, who is often out on errands when I get up and asleep when I get home. So last night I went back into some of our old footage and made up a video of her cuteness...

23 May 2007 - Why am I so afraid of mountain lions?
So today after lunch I thought I would go for a walk just to be healthy, and I thought What better place than the hills above Palo Alto? So I drove up the hill a little ways to a place we've hiked before. There was no one else there today and so I started to think about those "mountain lion habitat" signs entirely too much. Were I hiking with one of the girls or Cara, I would have been fine - even though logically I know that would make it more dangerous for me because I'd have to defend them as well as myself. Of course, they say you should never go out alone either. Every buggy sound coming from the grass was a possible predator. It didn't help that there was a large, fresh pile of skat full of cat hair in the middle of the path. Walking through the thick brush I startled a deer which ran off away from me and startled me probably more than I startled it. So, heart racing, I turned around and walked back to my car. I wanted to run, but somehow I felt that would surely bring the lion upon me. Even back safely in my car I felt an urgent pressing desire to leave the parking lot and get back on the road. Why am I so afraid of mountain lions? It seems rather ridiculous to me. Perhaps it's because I'm shifting a night right now and every evening I must walk to my car right along the deer trail next to BaBar. Predators hunt on game trails. Most nights the deer startle me here too in the pitch blackness of the night. I suppose I should feel good with the deer being there because they are the mountain lion's natural prey, but I can't help remembering the phrase I always tease the children with: I don't have to out run the tiger/bear/mountain lion, I just have to out run you. Those deer sure are fast.
Driving down the hill with my windows open, I felt a bug on my face and threw it out the window. Retracting my hand back into the car I noticed a stinger protruding from my thumb. Damn those modified oviposters.
