Lately my girth has begun to recede as it is wont to do in annual fashion. This has brought much applause and congratulations from my wife, who firmly believes that I have consciously done things to bring this about. I know I have not, and looking at the regularity of the graph I cannot but surmise that the periodicity is a function of nature rather than any will of mine. It is like being praised for causing the sun to rise in the morning or the tide to go out in the afternoon. Were there only a periodicity to my weight then that would be that, but there is also a linear term multiplying this periodicity. In the ebb and flow of 20-30 lbs over a year it’s quite easy to miss the 2 gained over the previous year’s ebb and flow. But seeing the graph creep slowly upward over the years it is unmistakable and the real longterm threat to health. Extrapolating the trend forward I will find myself topping 300 lbs as I reach my 50’s. The most recent peak gives me reason to hope though, as it (239.6) was no larger than its immediate predecessor (240.2). I will do my best to insure that this trough is a deep one, so perhaps the next peak may even register a decline.

Going to bed with the kiddoes at 9:30 means I'm up and chipper well before dawn. Today we are headed home, but not before we make another trip to the pool! I wish we had a pool this available at home - Maxwell & Zara would be much better swimmers. Unfortunately our neighborhood pool is closed in the evenings and occupied with swim meets on the weekends. C'est la vive. Being up and enjoying the serenade of snores I had time to post my first winetasting notes from Colorado.

Vacationing with Maxwell & Zara is an interesting experience. We were up up at 7 and at the pool this morning after driving the 600 miles from Lincoln to Colorado Springs and playing in the Garden of the Gods yesterday. This morning we got up up early (to hit the pool AGAIN) and picked up a Slurpee from 7-Eleven. Then it was up the mountains to Manitou's cog railway. Unfortunately, fresh snow and high winds kept us from going above the tree line, but the cost was prorated to our altitude. Maxwell & Zara really enjoyed the ride up, but on the way down there was only stuph they'd already seen . . . so kicking eachother was a much funner game. My boy wanted to see the "Seven Falls" after that, so we headed over to Cheyenne Mountain but the falls were frozen and the hiking trails were closed. They recommended we hit the North Cheyenne Cañon, a state park nearby with open hiking trails. Well, we headed up the cañon and found a good hiking place next to a sheer granite wall with grus below. The kids ran up the grus to the wall, and, unable to climb it, Zara was angered and pushed Maxwell. Maxwell freaked out and yelled leading Zara to flee at high speed, of course when she hit the icy parking lot she discovered what it means to loose friction. The "hiking" went down hill from there. Soon they voted to return to the hotel and it's indoor pool. We've spent the evening alternating between swimming and watching the olympics - not something you can do this time of year in Nebraska.

Brittan brought a cold home -
She was nice enough to share,
And it's hung around my head,
Longer than I'd care.
My nose just keeps on runnin',
But my tissuebox is gone!
My teeth they've been ahurtin',
Since I awoke at dawn,
How I love the children . . . most days.
