Cultivation of Vitis vinifera takes place in French Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), a government mandated regulation of the terrior, in Bordeaux. This is perhaps the most well-known region of France and the region that popularized many now worldwide varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
