Côte de Beaune

Bourgogne

The Côte de Beaune is the southern part of the Côte d'Or. Mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are grown there. Visible from Beaune are the five steps, where fault lines divide the region from the hills in the east to the plain of the Saône River in the west. These steps are (1) Morvan, granitic hills in the west, (2) Auxois, eroded mid-Jurassic limestone and Lias, (3) Montagne, a mid-Jurassic limestone plateau, (4) Hautes Côtes, a Late Jurassic plateau, and (5) Côte, which is the hillside leading up from the plain to the Hautes Côtes.
