Côte de Nuits

Bourgogne

The Côte de Nuits is the southern part of the Côte d'Or. Primarily Pinot Noir is grown there, but some white wines are also made. The five steps, where fault lines divide the region from the hills in the east to the plain of the Saône River in the west, are used to characterize this region's terrior. These steps are (1) Morvan, granitic hills in the west, (2) Auxois, eroded mid-Jurassic limestone and Lias, (3) Montagne, a mid-Jurassic limestone plateau, (4) Hautes Côtes, a Late Jurassic plateau, and (5) Côte, which is the hillside leading up from the plain to the Hautes Côtes.
