Côte d'Or

Bourgogne

The Côte d'Or is located in the northern part of Bourgogne. Mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are grown there. Geologically the region is divided by fault lines into five steps from the hills in the east to the plain of the Saône River in the west. The steps are (1) Morvan, granitic hills in the west, (2) Auxois, eroded mid-Jurassic limestone and Lias, (3) Montagne, a mid-Jurassic limestone plateau, (4) Hautes Côtes, a Late Jurassic plateau, and (5) Côte, which is the hillside leading up from the plain to the Hautes Côtes. In the north, the region is called Côte de Nuits, in the south it is called Côte de Beaune.
