Provence

France

Provence was widely settled as a province during the Roman Empire, from whence the region takes its name. Viticulture, however, predates the Romans in Provence as the Greeks had already introduced it. Today cultivation of Vitis vinifera takes place here in French Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), a government mandated regulation of the terrior.
