Châteauneuf-du-Pape

France

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is perhaps the best known AOC in the southern Rhône Valley where a variety of grapes are blended. The thirteen grapes usable in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge and Blanc blends are Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut, Muscardin, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Picpoul, Picardan, Grenache and Grenache Blanc (the French count the last two as one). It was in this region that the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée system was pioneered in the 1920s to improved what some growers saw as flagging quality standards among their fellow producers.
