The Côtes du Rhône are in the Rhône Valley where a variety of grapes are blended. The Côtes refers to the hills near the Rhône River, which flows down from the Alps in southeastern France. Cultivation of Vitis vinifera takes place in French Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), a government mandated regulation of the terrior, in Côtes du Rhône.
