Vino Nobile di Montepulcianois a wine grown in the Montepulciano area of Italia's Siena province which dates back to at least the 14th century. In modern times it was declared a DOC on 12 July 1966 and raised to a DOCG on 1 July 1980. Several lesser DOCs have been created in the same territory more recently. This red wine is made from at least 70% Sangiovese, which is locally called Prugnolo Gentile. The remainder is at most 10% Canaiolo Nero, at most 10% white varietals (except Malvasia del Chianti, which is forbidden) and the remainder other red varietals. The wine requires 12.5% alcohol and 2 years aging. With 13% alcohol and 3 years aging, of which 6 months must be in the bottle, it may be labeled Riserva.
