Via Gebennensis

Saint-Jeures to Saint-Julien-Chapteuil

France

Trails Index | Via Gebennensis

Another short segment, it's only 18 kilometers from Saint-Jeures to Saint-Julien-Chapteuil. The road descends from Saint-Jeures and the next town of Araules is viewable across the valley. Then begins the long slow climb to Queyrières, and entering the recently volcanic part of France (2 million years ago). From the hillside looking across the valley are dozens of peaks that were once volcanos. Queyrières itself is built around a tower of basalt columns that were once molten at the core of a volcano. The descent from there to Saint-Julien-Chapteuil is a pleasant one with plenty of interesting geological outcroppings visible on the nearby hills.
