St. Jean-Pied-de-Port - Roncevalles France/España Trails Index | Camino de Santiago

This section of the Camino crosses the border from France into Spain, and is traditionally where the Spanish Camino begins. Several routes trhough France, including the Voie de Puy-En-Velay, merge just here before. The path up the mountain follows the Route Napoléon where the French conqueror once lead his armies into Spain. Sheep graze in the grassy fields as one climbs up to Spain. Crossing the border, one is thrust into the forest all the way to the highest point before the descent to Roncevalles. There are two paths down: one easy, one steep and fast.
