Starting from the lakeshore in the town of Zug, the first third of this segment is flat and weaving counterclockwise around the Zugersee. In Buonas it leaves the short and heads up into the hills. There one gets some of the best views of Rigi I've seen. Around the halfway point just before Meierkappel one crosses the cantonal border from Zug into Luzern. Then it's forest and fields through the hills with a couple small towns until one reaches the city of Luzern.
