How should you respond? Well, what has changed? Nothing really.
Alora has decided she wants to date girls. That's all that's
available at Mary Baldwin, and large percentage of them date
eachother. Of all the things a teenager can decide to sample,
this is probably one of the least dangerous. There is also much
less social stigma around girls dating other girls in college.
My cousin did the same thing.
I was kind of sad that Alora was worried about telling me. Like
I'm going to stop loving her or something. Like I'm a stereotype.
This was doubly weird because I tried to have the conversation
about her sexuality this past summer. While we were watching Korra. A
cartoon she enjoys where the main character switches from dating
to dating girls. Strange things happen on Nickelodeon these
days...
So what did I tell my daughter? That I love her and she has to
discover who she is for herself. Nobody can tell you who you are
but you. My heart swells with pride when I think about all Alora
has accomplished in life and all the things in life that she has
ahead of her.
