This is a great book, and I'm disappointed by it. While those two may seem at odds, hear me out. Greg Woolf has specialized his career on the Roman Empire, and The Life and Death of Ancient Cities is a great book on the development of cities around the Mediterranean culminating in imperial Rome. What it is not, however, is an exhaustive look at ancient cities. The rest of the world outside the Mediterranean basin gets scant mention, as if Rome didn't have comtemporaries in China, the Americas, India, etc. The content of the book just doesn't nearly live up to the scope of the title.
