This week is the Bergen International Film Festival and there are a number of films premiering, as it's supposedly the biggest film festival in Norway. On Tuesday I went out to see one of the films that I had heard was good, but it was sold out so I saw The Fight For Greenland instead after getting a recommendation from a couple of the festival volunteers. I'm so glad that I did! The film was in Greenlandic, Danish and English with English subtitles and it was a pleasure to watch the characters of the documentary switch between them throughout the film, while I also had English subtitles. Admittedly, if I'd been forced to watch it with Norwegian subtitles I don't think I would have faired as well. The film is about Greenlanders' ongoing discussion around independence from Denmark, how to preserve the local culture, and of course some Trumpian stupidity. I could so feel the condescention of the ethnic Danes talking to the ethnic Greenlanders, who seem to be treated like foreigners in their own country. It is a look I have seen on many a Norwegian's face. Aside from my personal relation to it, the documentary is informative and quite accessible. I definitely can recommend it.
