It's been a sunny week so far and today I have spent the morning in bed with a cup coffee and a book, the birds outside chirping loudly through the open window that also provides a cool breeze. Life is truly sweet in this northern paradise. While visiting Hilton Head dad was wont to say that "it's another beautiful day in paradise", and for him I know it was. I think the Icelanders of the sagas might be of a different mind.

The Sagas of Icelanders is a book I picked up in Klefavik during a stop there some years back. A thick book in both pages and sheer numbers of stories and events, it has taken me a while to make my way through it. Like all classics of literature it is well worth it for the picture of the world it paints among the northern Europeans. Because the stories take place across the viking world, from my home in Norway to England to Denmark to Greenland and even to America to Constantinople to Rome, the reader is left with a look at history from a perspective centered in the north.
