Ryan Holiday can be a bit self promontional, but his book of anecdotes illustrating the principles of stoicism, The Obstacle is the Way, is a good reminders of timeless principles that help one remain an island of calm as the world storms around them. Practice objectivity. Live in the present moment. Alter your perspective. What's right is what works. Amor fati. Momento mori. Every chapter is something like a mini devotional that merits slow reading and digestion. When I read Epictetus a decade ago I flew through it, but when I picked up Seneca after the ex-wife moved out I read it slowly over the course of several months. I tried to read and digest this work at the same rate, because the topics merit meditation. Chewing around on the ideas of stoicism is beneficial as life never stops throwing adversity at you. As Holiday so eloquently writes, somethings the only way is through. ![]() Reading on Eldsfjellet yesterday |
