EU Kontroll

I'm sitting in the NAF waiting room as my car is inspected for the EU kontroll. They have wifi. I was going to work. However I'm stressed about this government intrusion into my life. Perhaps I should explain. Norway is not in the EU, but conforms to a lot of EU laws. They are part of the common border instituted under the Schengen treaty and generally ignored during the Covid-19 pandemic. This meant (and theoretically will one day mean again) that people can move around freely within these countries' common borders. So the EU has rules under the guise of safety to promote new car sales by requiring inspection of vehicles every couple of years called in Norway "EU Kontroll". NAF, for readers in the US, is the local equivalent of AAA. The government inspection required by the EU and thus required by the Norwegian government is implemented by private companies. I picked NAF because I'm a member so I figure they won't screw me on the inspection. Still, my car is not worth the tens of thousands of kroner it might take to repair some parts of it. So this may be the end of our relationship....

Fortunately, it was not. Just some light bulbs and brakes to replace. It's an incredible relief to have that behind me.
