I became acquianted with the work of Ted Chiang through the surprisingly good movie The Arrival, which I expected very little from and came away quite impressed. Ergo I decided to read his latest book, Exhalation, which is a collection of short stories. Some of the short stories could have been fleshed out into full novels, but why bother when the kernal is enough to express the idea Chiang wants to communicate. In Exhalation he imparts stories on everything from the fallabilty of human memory, to the development of an artificial mind, to the depressing inevitability of thermodynamics. Throughout his stories Chiang's characters and story arcs present a hopeful view of humanity. Often they discover something about their own fallabilty or mortality in the course of the story. Easy to pick up, but hard to put down; I'd definitely recommend reading Chiang's book.
