DadLast Blog | Index | Next Blog Books | Films | Marrakech Training | Pictures 8 November 2021 - Hilton Head Island It's Monday here on the island after quite an exhausting weekend. Sunday was my third time change in like a week between European daylight savings ending, flying across the Atlantic, and now US daylight savings ending as well. Saturday afternoon we got together at the Wagner's for a "Friendsgiving" among the great group of folks that assembled here in retirementland. There's the Millers, who lived down the street from in Pennsylvania when I was in elementary school. My dad had a strict no toy guns rule in our house, but Jim Miller may us toy guns out of wood. Now he wants to make me a bat to take back to Norway for next season. Debbie Wagner grew up with Donna Miller, and Mark Wagner has become a great friend to dad. Dave and Maureen were there too. Like Jim and my dad, Dave worked at AIG. Then there's my aunt Amy, who moved here from Portland last year, and my aunt Dell, who flew in from Tahoe to see dad. Lastly there's Benny and Jane; Benny knows dad from as far back as elementary school. They just got their South Carolina driver's licenses this week. ![]() Amy, Mom, Dad, Mark, Debbie, Donna, Maureen, Dave, Jim, Jane, Benny Yesterday dad was tired and recovering from all the excitement. The cancer has made his body and mind weak. Six months ago when I was here we played golf together, which was a weekly outing that wore him out. Now I'm helping him transfer back and forth from his wheelchair to the car. He wants to play board games, but he's too confused to figure out games he taught me when I was a child. Above all he's sweet and scared and looking to mom to guide him and take care of him which she does with aplomb. This period after stopping chemo and before death is called "the honeymoon", and dad seems to be enjoying it despite all the pain and confusion. |
