Baden & Bad ZurzachLast Blog | Index | Next Blog Books | Films | Marrakech Training | Baden Photos 19 Dezember 2021 Today saw us exploring in Aargau, starting with Baden for lunch and the local historic museum. Baden was like other European cities with similar names (e.g. Baden-Baden in Deutschland and Bath in Britain) was a city founded by the Romans because of the geothermally heated water available. Baden is located on hillsides above the Limmat downstream from Zürich. To the north is the more modern thermal bath on the border at Bad Zurzach. My phone was convinced I had crossed the Rhine into Deutschland, but it's just close by. To get the hot water they had to drill down over 400 meters, but it comes up at 39.9 degrees celsius. This is pretty warm, but I wouldn't really call it hot. Unlike most naturally heated water sources I've been to it's not volcanic and there is no trace of a sulfur smell to the water. This isn't Iceland or the Rockies! Indeed Iwona even uses geothermal energy to heat the water in her house, something I did not realize was possible outside of volcanically active areas. The baths in Zurzach did not disappoint and have become such a popular attraction over the past century that the town renamed itself to Bad Zurzach 15 years ago. ![]() |
