Don't Look UpLast Blog | Index | Next Blog Books | Films | Marrakech Training 26 Dezember 2021 - Earth Don't Look Up is a dark comedy that captures the ethos of our time in much the same way as Dr. Strangelove did with 1960's America. The sheer ineptitude of supposed leaders also mirrors what we've seen in real life with the Coronavirus, as the worst of them just exploit crisis for political gain. Leonardo DiCaprio's anxiety-ridden scientist and Jennifer Lawrence's dyed, pierced and painted grad student showcase stereotypes of Gen X and Millennials, while giving each generation a character to latch on to. Social media and political pundits actively telling people not to "question the science" while spinning truthy lies to support their faction's ends rings all too familiar. The inevitable backlash of being lied to sees the populace turn to the titular antiscience slogan, which the same politicians then exploit for more personal gain. And there's explosions. While two decades ago Deep Impact and Armageddon gave us hope that humanity might survive a comet coming to kill us, this film does its level best to demonstrate that our worst instincts might instead defeat us. |
