Ai Weiwei is one of those people who's been on the edge of my radar for a while now. One of his documentaries have been on my list of things to watch for at least a decade - well before TaskGiraffe. But his memoir, 1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows, is my first encounter with the man directly. Well, as directly as one can through translation. As with many Chinese of intellectual pedigree, Ai had a difficult childhood, growing up in work camps of the cold north and western desert. But in him I found a kindred spirit who also finds the only natural reaction to abusive authority is disobedience. Read this book!
